Homemade Deer Repellent: an activity for children of all ages. As beautiful and gentle as deer are, they can wreak havoc on a garden. There are many harmless and organic ideas on how to deer proof your garden, from planting strong odored herbs and building high fences to store bought deer repellents. But be aware, many of the store bought deer repellents can harm or poison the deer. This recipe, although harmless to deer, will help to deter them from coming into your garden.

  • Supplies:
    • blender or bowl and whisk
    • one liter spray bottle or sprayer
  • Ingredients:
    • one raw egg yolk
    • 1 tbsp baking powder
    • one liter water
  • Combine the egg yolk, 1 tbsp baking powder, and one liter water in a bowl and mix thoroughly. (Variations of this recipe include 1 tbsp hot pepper flakes with two cloves chopped garlic, and another added 1tsp dish soap. Both of these variations encourage you to allow the mixture to sit overnight to a few days before applying to the plant.)
  • Put into a sprayer of your choice.
  • Spray on and around the plants. Make sure to test the homemade spray out on a small part of your plants first to make sure it doesn’t harm them in any way.
  • Reapply every two weeks or after rain.
