Homemade Applesauce

The Abundant Garden: Growing Quality Kids Through Gardening

Homemade Applesauce: an activity for children of all ages. This recipe is easy and fun and a good way to bring the smell of fall into your kitchen. In this activity, children will learn how to make applesauce.

  • Supplies:
  • Ingredients:
    • 9 apples (three apples each of three kinds of varieties)
    • 1 1/2 cups of water OR 3/4 cups water and 3/4 cup apple juice/cider
    • 1 tsp cinnamon or allspice (or to taste)
    • 1/4 to 1/2 cup sugar if desired (we make it without and it tastes great)
  • Read the book:
    • Applesauce Season by Eden Ross Lipson – highly recommended for children ages 4-10. (R)
  • Wash hands thoroughly.
  • Peel, core, and quarter each apple.
  • Place the apples in a large cooking pot with the water and/or apple juice/cider to cook.
  • Bring to a boil over medium heat.
  • Cover and reduce heat to low and allow the apples to simmer until tender (about 20 minutes).
  • Either use an immersion blender to blend the apples or place the mixture in a blender and blend until smooth.
  • Eat warm or cool.
  • If you decide to make the apple cider donuts, you can use your homemade applesauce from this recipe.
