Homemade pasta sauce: a recipe for children of all ages. There is something about the smell of garlic, onions, and tomatoes as they cook together. In this activity, children will learn how to bring produce from the garden to the table as they make homemade pasta sauce.

  • Supplies:
    • slow cooker or cooking pot
    • wooden spoon
  • Ingredients:
    • 1/2 cup butter
    • 1 lg onion, diced
    • 5 cloves of garlic, minced
    • 2 cups tomatoes (from the garden), diced or 16 oz can diced tomatoes
    • 8 oz can tomato sauce
    • 2 tbsp rosemary, freshly chopped
    • 2 tbsp parsley, freshly chopped
    • 2 tbsp pesto
    • salt and pepper, to taste
    • thin with water as desired
  • In a slow cooker saute together the onion in butter. Cook until onion is transparent then saute the garlic.
  • Add the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, rosemary, parsley, pesto, salt and pepper.
  • Cook for 2 to 3 hours on low heat, stirring frequently.
  • Serve over pasta or allow sauce to cool before pouring the sauce into quart-sized freezer containers.
  • Store in freezer.
