Homemade Pesto: an activity for children of all ages. In this activity, children will learn they can “shop” in their backyard as they make yummy, healthy food.

  • Supplies:
    • blender
    • small mason jar
  • Ingredients:
    • 1/2 to 1 cup spinach, washed well
    • 4 cups basil leaves, washed
    • 2/3 pine nuts or walnuts
    • 1/4 cup olive oil
    • 6 cloves garlic
    • salt and pepper to taste
    • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese (optional – tastes great without it!)
  • Add all the ingredients (except the cheese) in a blender and process until well mixed.
  • Transfer to a bowl and add cheese if desired.
  • Put into small mason jars and store in the refrigerator.
  • If you are wanting to use up your Easter eggs, you can make pesto egg salad sandwiches by combining 6 hard-boiled eggs (finely chopped) with 1/2 cup pesto and unrefined sea salt to taste.
  • Enjoy your pesto on grilled cheese sandwhiches, pasta salads, pizzas, pastas, soups, and sauces!
