Make a Potato Stamp

Make a Potato Stamp: an activity for children of all ages. In this activity, children will learn one way in how food can be used to create art.

  • Supplies:
    • potato
    • metal cookie cutter (optional)
    • sharp knife
    • cutting board
    • rag/power towel
    • washable paint or a stamp pad
    • paint or foam brush
    • butcher paper, card-stock paper, fabric (whatever you want to paint)
  • Cut about 1/2 of the end of a potato off or, if using a longer design, cut the potato in half. (Watch the video for more instruction if desired).
  • If using a cookie cutter, push the cutter about one centimeter deep into the potato. Leave the cookie cutter in place.
  • About 1/2 centimeter up, cut a slice around the cookie cutter, making sure to cut around the shape of the cookie cutter.
  • OR (for adults or responsible older children only) use a pairing knife to cut a design into a potato.
  • Remove the freshly cut part of the potato.
  • Remove the cookie cutter and a potato stamp should remain!
  • Wipe the potato dry with a dry rag or paper towel and lightly apply paint to the stamp using a paint brush or by pushing into the ink of a stamp pad.
  • And create!
  • Consider making wrapping paper, bookmarks, a paper table cloth for a Valentine’s Day party, or greeting/holiday cards.
  • Take pictures and tag #theabundantgarden on Instagram to share your fun and for an opportunity to be featured @theabundantgarden.
